A Chola style copper alloy figure of Shiva Nataraja within a flaming aureole. Southern India. 19th century

Standing with one leg on the conquered demon Apasmarapurusha, his primary hands held in dancing gestures, a serpent undulates around the right arm, his subsidiary hands holding daimaru and a flame. The hair strands showing the wild movements of his dancing and extending to both sides, on one of the hair strands the sitting figure of Ganga. Lotus flower base above a square pedestal probably a later replacement.
