A portable nanban-lacquer cabinet. Momoyama period, second half 16th century

Behind a fall-front panel eight drawers, the front of the drawer in the centre with an architectural-style arch, decorated in gold makie and aogai inlays on black lacquer with two shishi amidst blossoming plants on the front panel, with a rooster amidst plants on the top, with clematis to the back and a vine with grapes respective autums plants at the sides, within borders of aogai triangles or golden wavy lines. The fittings at the corners, the lock and the handle of chiseled bronze. Traces of use, especially on the top, one drawer and the lockplate with a key are later replacements.
