Cruxificion of Christ

Oil on panel. 53 x 43 cm.

The present Cruxificion by an anonymous master is a good example of the Antwerp Mannerist influence within a composition of the Bruges tradition. This is evidenced by the embroidered dress with arabesque decor and the elegant hairdress with gold mesh worn by Mary Magdalene, who is shown weeping at the foot of the Cross. If the composition typology refers to Adriaen Isenbrandt (see the Cruxificion sold by Dorotheum, Vienna, 19.04.2016, lot 13) and before him to Gerard David, the figure of Christ with his fluttering perizonium is clearly inspired by Rogier van der Weyden. As for the landscape in the background, its rocky peaks evoke the style of Joachim Patinier, who was working in Antwerp at that time.
