Willem van den Bundel
Woodland Landscape with Hunters
Oil on panel (parquetted). 48 x 63 cm.
This forest landscape is a characteristic work of Wilhelm van den Bundel, who was born in Brussels in 1575 but was primarily active in Amsterdam and Delft in the Netherlands. His landscapes thus display the influence of Flemish and Dutch artists, such as Jan Bruegel and Esaias van de Velde. A mighty tree occupying the entire height of the painting with two hunters at its base forms the centre of the composition. In addition to the trees placed at intervals throughout the image, van den Bundel uses paths leading into the distance populated with hunters, peasants and shepherds to create the illusion of depth.
