Johann Pietersz Schoeff

Panoramic Landscape with two Farmers at Rest

Oil on panel. 36 x 51 cm.
Remains of a signature at lower right: Scho.

Johann Pietersz Schoeff, who was probably born and raised in Antwerp, moved to The Hague in 1639, where he was a neighbour of Jan van Goyen for a short period. Besides van Goyen, Schoeff was influenced by Salomon van Ruysdael and Lucas van Uden. In addition, however, there are works which H.U. Beck has described as "his own creations without a 'model'". These are "panoramic landscapes with rising hills interspersed with rows of bushes", a description that applies to the present work.

We thank Ellis Dullaart for confirming the attribution to Johan Pietersz Schoeff. She dates the painting around 1645.

Provenance

German private collection.
