Cornelis Boumeester

Sailing Ships off the Coast

Oil on panel. 37.5 x 49.5 cm.
Monogrammed lower right: CBM (on the barrel).

This painting, executed in grisaille, shows several sailing ships on calm seas with a strip of coast with a mill in the distance. In the execution, great importance is attached to the reproduction of even the smallest details, such as the ropes of the rigging, which have been drawn in with pen.
The painting is a fine and typical work by Cornelis Boumeester, who was active in Rotterdam at the same time as the other representatives of the "penschilderij" circle Adriaen and Roelof van Salm. In addition to the so-called "parade pieces", i.e. detailed depictions of specific and nameable ships, his main motifs include Dutch sailing ships off the local coast, as in the present work.
