Jacob Philipp Hackert

River Landscape with Bowling Peasants

Oil on canvas (relined). 60 x 72 cm.
Signed lower left: Hackert.

From 1762 to 1765 Hackert lived as a guest of Herr von Olthof in his house in Stralsund and in the manor house of Boldevitz on Rügen. During these years he produced a series of etchings with motifs from the island of Rügen, some of which can also be found in this painting.
In her expert opinion Claudia Nordhoff wrote: "The present painting is clearly by Jacob Philipp Hackert; it was undoubtedly painted during his pre-Italian years. The first signed and dated paintings by the young painter were created in Berlin and attest to Hackert's artistic preoccupation on the one hand with the immediate surroundings of the city, and on the other hand with the 17th century models he copied in the Berlin galleries and collections and whose motifs he also used for his own pictorial compositions."

Dr Nordhoff dates the painting to the years 1762/1763.
