Franconia around 1480/1490

A Franconian carved wood figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1480/1490

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. Large sculpture designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint depicting the Virgin holding the nude Christ Child over Her hip. She stands in a gently swaying pose upon a crescent moon with a face. The work's sculptural volume is largely defined by the drapery of the white veil and golden cloak, which fall in thick pleats and folds about the Virgin's body.
With vertical hairline cracks. Wear with minor losses to the child's fingers and toes and to the crown. Height 147 cm.

Provenance
