Bavaria around 1515

A Bavarian carved wood figure of Saint Catherine, around 1515

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the crowned saint standing in a gentle swaying pose facing slightly towards the left, designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds a fragment of a wheel studded with broken nails in her left hand as an identifying attribute and reference to her martyrdom. The finely carved work derives much of its sculptural volume from the drapery of the golden cloak worn drawn about the figure's body in a rich interplay of rounded and vertical folds.
The flowers on the crown reattached. Round hairline cracks and small replacements to the underside of the plinth. Minor wear. Height 96 cm.
