Bavaria ca. 1570

A small Bavarian domestic altar made for Juncker Geirdrut, ca. 1570

Oil on panel, wooden altar frame with presumably original partial older polychromy. This small altarpiece depicts the Adoration of the Magi on its central panel, whilst the side panels show Saints Valerian and Cecilia. The outer panels of the wings are painted with rosettes. A coat-of-arms has been included in the tendril ornament that decorates the upper section of the altarpiece, and the predella is inscribed "IVNCKER GEIRDRVT AVX". Landshut has been suggested as the possible origin of this charming and precious work.
Minor retouches to the paintings, especially in the sky section of the central panel. In good overall condition with only minor wear. Height 34.5 cm, width 26 cm (48 cm when opened).

Provenance

Senger art dealership, Bamberg.
