Joseph de Pues

A carved figure of the Virgin and Child by Joseph de Pues,
active in Antwerp since 1762

Boxwood, carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. Mounted on an old round original plinth. A figure of the Virgin standing in contrapposto, designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the Christ Child, clothed in a perizonium, over Her hip. This finely detailed work is signed "I:D:PUES" to the front of the original plinth. Joseph de Pues is documented as an apprentice of Daniel II Herreyn, a sculptor from a large family of artists from Antwerp who was active until 1772, in 1762.
With some vertical hairline cracks and minor wear. Height 55 cm.
