Ludwig Philipp Strack

View of Plön seen from Mount Parnass

Oil on canvas. 65.5 x 91.5 cm.

Inscribed "Strack" and "67" on the reverse of the canvas and with an old label with the handwritten title "Ploen vom Berg Parnas gesehen" on the stretcher. In the original fame with an old collection label "Ansicht von Ploen in Holst. / Strack sen. / 67."
In 1809/1810, the Oldenburg court painter Ludwig Philipp Strack painted a view of the town of Plön in Holstein with its Baroque castle seen from the north, with the view extending far across the Great Lake of Plön (German private ownership, 63 x 92 cm; Francksen-Liesenfeld 2008, op. cit., pp. 179 and 304, no. G 100 with colour illustration).
This previously lost painting reiterates the view in the same format, but with a slightly altered composition and reduced details. It is one of a series of Holstein landscapes that once belonged to the collection of the Duke of Oldenburg and was still housed in Oldenburg in 1848. The fact that the dimensions of our painting correspond to the information in the 1848 inventory makes the identification clear.

Provenance

Former painting collection of the Dukes of Oldenburg. Housed in Oldenburg Palace in 1848. - Dutch private ownership.
