Andreas Johann Jakob Müller

The Coronation of the Virgin

Oil on canvas. 166 x 149 cm.

After his time as a pupil of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Peter Cornelius at the Munich Art Academy, Andreas Müller moved to the Düsseldorf Academy in 1834. Together with Ernst Deger, Franz Ittenbach and his brother Carl, he undertook trips to Florence and Rome in 1837-1843, where he made the preparatory sketches for the fresco cycle in the neo-Gothic church of St. Apollinaris in Remagen, which was executed between 1843 and 1853 and can be regarded as the great collective and main work of the Düsseldorf late Nazarenes. In 1857 Andreas Müller was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

The following letter is attached to the back of the original frame: "The present copy after the original by Rafael was painted by my father, Prof. Andreas Müller, in the years 1838-1840 in the Vatican. It was intended as a gift for his wife Katharina, née Sweden. The painting passed from her possession to her children, who bequeathed it to the Franciscan Sisters' Cooperative as a memento of the Andreas Müller family, five members of which belonged to this cooperative. On behalf, as the last member of the Andreas Müller family, his youngest daughter Wilhelmine Müller at the age of 90. Nonnenwerth, 30 November 1949."
