Salomon Leonardus Verveer

Evening Landscape with Children Fishing

Oil on canvas (relined). 95 x 136 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: S. L. Verveer 55.

Salomon Leonard Verveer was one of the most important and successful Dutch artists of the 19th century. His oeuvre mainly consists of city and village views as well as river and dune landscapes. The present, large-format work shows a tree-lined water landscape bathed in the light of the setting sun. The peaceful atmosphere of the view is accentuated by the groups of figures shown fishing with rod and net in the waters whilst other figures simply look on from their vantage point on a bridge. The work illustrates the theme of man living in harmony with nature, one of the central motifs of the Romantic Movement, of which Verveer can still be considered a proponent.
We would like to thank Mayken Jonkman of the RKD in The Hague for confirming the authenticity of this work from photographs.
