After the painting in Schleißheim Palace, which is one of a series of 14 allegorical representations of the twelve months as well as of day and night, which Joachim von Sandrart executed in his Amsterdam studio on behalf of the Bavarian Elector Maximilian I and sent from there to the Bavarian court. The depictions of the months all follow a characteristic compositional scheme that combines a three-quarter figure in close-up with still-life-like elements in the foreground and smaller genre scenes or landscape vistas in the background. The female figure of September is one of the most elegant representations of the cycle.
