Titled by the artist on a label on the reverse: "Dünen-Strand" and dated "1896 - Vlissingen".

This beach study, which is lent a modern appearance by its broad brushtrokes, thick application of paint and almost monochrome colour palette, is a product of Clarenbach's early period. At this time, the artist studied at the Düsseldorf Academy at the recommendation of Andreas Achenbach and made frequent trips to Holland. The present work was painted there en plein air on the beach of Vlissingen.
