German School, frist half 19th century

Landscape with a Waterfall near Oberaudorf

Oil on canvas (relined). 53.5 x 75 cm.
Inscribed and dated lower left: C. Rottmann 1841.

With a label on the reverse of the stretcher with an inventory number from the Georg Schäfer Collection, Schweinfurt.

This finely painted landscape was listed in the Schäfer Collection as a work of Carl Rottmann and was exhibited under this artist's name in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg in 1967. In her catalogue raisonné of Carl Rottmann's work, however, Erika Bierhaus-Rödiger expressed doubts with regard to its authorship and placed the painting "rather in the vicinity of the Munich artist Albert Zimmermann".
However, the characteristic rocky area in our painting strongly resembles a depiction of rocks in a watercolour by Rottmann in a Munich private collection (see Bierhaus-Rödiger 1978, op. cit., p. 168, no. 35, fig. 35).
