Grid structures were already dominant in Günther Förg's window paintings from the early 1990s; in the grid paintings of the 2000s, they were taken up again. This theme finds particular emphasis in a series of works from the year 2000, to which the work on show here pertains. The artist set narrow black bars at wide distances from each other vertically on the picture surface. These are partially closed off by one horizontally positioned bar in the upper third of the painting. Despite being entirely abstract, Förg's grid paintings evoke associations of architectural elements; in this case, the viewer is reminded of the view through balcony railings.
