Stephan Balkenhol

Untitled
2008

Wawa wood, partly painted.. 168 x 34 x 24.5 cm. - Traces of studio and minor traces of age.

With much dedication to the material of wood and the depiction of the human figure, Stephan Balkenhol has paved his way to becoming one of Germany’s most successful artists. Born in the Hessian town of Fritzlar in 1957, he came into contact with art early on due to the proximity to the documenta in Kassel. Balkenhol’s “Menschen aus Holz” [people made of wood] seem unfathomable to the viewer. Neither do they comprise any political statements nor do the titles offer any additional semantic content. The material itself acts as a symbol of nature, it stands for rootedness and stability. The figures are sometimes engaged in a dance or are gazing into a corner with their backs to the viewer, mostly with their mouths closed. No exuberant gestures, no excessive stimulus in gestures or facial expressions. Such is the case of the female figure offered here, so captivating with her light blond hair and restrained posture. She directs her mild gaze into the room, the same room that is occupied by the viewer. The encounter with the sculpture, which is at eye level due to the imposing pedestal, encourages introspection and prompts a moment of tranquillity.
