Bronze. Height 14.3 cm. Mounted on marble base (3 x 24.1 x 12 cm). Signed and dated 'Gaul 1898' to the side of plinth. - Fine, dark brown patina. - Very good condition. Base lightly chipped.

After his first examination of the subject in 1893, Gaul took up the pictorial idea of a young lion again five years later and created a somewhat smaller but more finely executed sculpture of the motif. It is one of the sculptor's most popular works.
