August Gaul

Drei Pinguine
1903/1911

Bronze. Height 17.9 cm. Mounted on marble base (3.1 x 22 x 7 cm). Signed 'A. GAUL' on left edge of plinth verso. Presumably a life-time cast. - Fine, dark brown patina, partly lightened. - Very good condition. Base lightly chipped.

The group "Three Penguins" was created in 1903 in connection with an unexecuted grand fountain with two groups of penguins and two sea lions for the palace grounds in Münster. In 1911, Gaul revised the model of the one penguin group so that it could be published as an independent work.
