Untitled
1950s/1960s

Carpet, knotted wool. 190 x 145 cm. After a work by Adolf Fleischmann, knotted by his friend Sofie Bühler. Unique work. - One corner minimally rubbed, few weak black stains.

Adolf Fleischmann had been friends with Sofie Bühler since the period he spent in Zurich, notwithstanding their two marriages. He painted her portrait and she knotted rugs based on his works. Addressing her as his “dear Sef”, their friendship also continued after his emigration to the US. “This energetic woman, who was well connected in the art scene, furthered Fleischmann’s interests in Germany, organised reviews for him, passed on his designs and also did whatever else she could do to help him from Stuttgart” (Marion M. Ruisinger, Der alte Mann und die Neue Welt. 1952. Adolf Fleischmanns Begegnungen mit New York, in: exhib. cat. Berlin 2015/2016, Surfaces. Adolf Fleischmann - Grenzgänger zwischen Kunst und Medizin, p. 120).

Provenance
