A pair of sconces after a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel

Five-flame wall appliques made from bronze-plated and gilded wood chip paste on wooden core, zinc/lead, and iron. The nozzles fitted for electricity, with older wires, two breakages, some localised wear to the gilding, in need of restoration. H c. 40, W c. 40. D 25 cm.
Berlin, wood bronze factory of Carl August Mencke, around 1829 - 35.

Käthe Klappenbach mentions that Karl Friedrich Schinkel first used sconces made of wood bronze in 1816 for the dance hall in the palace of Prince August. The type shown here was probably originally intended for the palace of Prince Albrecht, which Schinkel renovated and refurbished as of 1829. The building was severely damaged in an air raid in November 1944, and the furnishings are considered lost.
