The Palais Unter den Linden, built by Langhans, was used by Crown Prince Wilhelm, later Emperor Wilhelm I, as his inner-city official residence for many decades. His presence there was indicated by the raised flag. He would then post himself at the corner window when the changing of the guard took place in the Neue Wache opposite, so that the people of Berlin could see for themselves that he was well. KPM probably produced this plate in memory of the popular emperor, who also died there in 1888.
