During the summer months, Franz Skarbina liked to spend a few weeks by the seaside. He travelled several times to Ostend in Belgium. Very close to this fashionable seaside resort, the old fishing village of De Pann, where Skarbina painted his famous picture "On the Digue" in 1883 (today housed in the Berlinische Galerie), also developed into a popular seaside resort. Skarbina painted several pictures there, including the works "Young Woman on the Beach" and "At Low Tide" in 1892 (M. Bröhan. Franz Skarbina, 1995, pp. 110,111). He painted the present summer image, with its rich green grass and bright yellow flowers, in the same town a year earlier. The small fishermen's cottages that stand out behind the lush wall of plants are characteristic of the old village.
