A rare porcelain pipe bowl with a portrait of a hussar

Silver-mounted pipe head with a finely painted portrait in black camaieu and "indianische blumen".
Unmarked, attributed to the manufactory of Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, Vienna, around 1730, the silver mountings with hallmarks of Altenburg/Saxony, maker's mark CL.

A possible prototype for the portrait of a hussar is the print by Caspar Luyken from the "Neu=eroeffnete (n) Welt=Galleria" by Abraham à Sancta Clara, which was published by Christoph Weigel in Nuremberg in 1703.

Provenance

Private collection, Westphalia.
