A pair of Meissen porcelain dishes from the dinner service for Count Sulkowski

Sulkowski-Ozier model. Decorated in the centre with the Count's crowned arms of alliance supported by two lions rampant surrounded by "indianische blumen". Blue crossed swords mark, blue dash, impressed cross dreher's mark, incised 4. Minor wear and scratches. D 38.5 cm.
1738, model by Johann Joachim Kaendler.

The service, which was produced in Meissen for the Saxon minister Aleksander Józef Reichsgraf von Sulkowski and his wife Maria Anna Franziska von Stain zu Jettingen in 1735, is one of the first large orders that was not made directly for the Saxon elector Friedrich August II (King August III of Poland) and in which Johann Joachim Kaendler was involved as a modeller. How large this order was can only be guessed at. It is assumed that a total of about 600 pieces were produced, mostly plates, platters and shallow bowls. Production came to an abrupt end in 1738 because the Imperial Count fell from grace and was banished from court.

Provenance

Private collection, Westphalia, acquired in 1996 from Röbbig, Munich.
