The Holy Family with Saint John and an Angel

Giovanni Battista da Ponte was the third son of the painter Jacopo Bassano, the founder of a successful family workshop in Venice. Although his brothers Francesco and Leandro are more well known, apart from in the very finest works of Jacopo, Francesco and Leandro, it is a difficult task to identify the works of each on stylistic grounds. The "Bassano style" with its unmistakable subject matter and unusual colour palette was cultivated equally by all three brothers.

Housed in its original frame, the present work forms a harmonious Seicento ensemble of particular charm.
