Johann Jacob Hartmann

Two Wooded Landscapes with Figures

Oil on panel. Each 33 x 41.5 cm.

Each inscribed "Hartmann" on the reverse in old script.

Johann Jacob Hartmann was the first Bohemian painter to specialise in landscape painting in the Mannerist style, which had been established generations earlier by Rudolf II's court artists in Prague. Like his predecessors, for example Gillis van Coninxloo or Anton Mirou, Hartmann often divided his landscape compositions into two parts, which, as in the present pair of paintings, merge to form a panorama-like landscape.

Provenance

European private collection.
