Signed and dated (on the stone plinth): A: Graff pinx: 1767.

This portrait of a young lady holding a parasol and leaning on a stone plinth in a garden is a new discovery in Anton Graff's extensive oeuvre. Privately owned in Germany for generations, it has remained unknown even to the author of the artist's catalogue raisonné, Ekhart Berckenhagen ("Anton Graff. Leben und Werk", Berlin 1967).
