Josef Anton Koch

Portrait of Cassandra Koch

Black and white chalk. 21.3 x 15.1 cm.
Inscribed lower right: Cassandra K.

Inscribed once more on the verso: Cassandra Koch, and: "Presumably the drawing is a work by Augusto Koch, the son of Joseph Anton Koch. But perhaps by another master from the circle of the Deutschrömer or by J.A.K. himself".
The portrait study belongs to the painting that was in the possession of the Koch family in Rome until the 1980s (Lutterotti, no. G15) and "was probably painted during the Viennese period 1812-15, or soon after". Lutterotti's entry on the painting (p. 286), in turn, states with regard to the present drawing: "A portrait study for the painting has been preserved in Z1075 in Neuburg a. d. Donau" - which is probably to be understood in such a way that, contrary to the inscription on the reverse, he recognises the sheet as a work in his own hand. The portrait of his wife Cassandra, born 1783 in Olevano, is one of the few portraits that J. A. Koch ever painted.
