This drawing is a study for the painting "Landscape with Ruth and Boaz", formerly in an English private collection and dated by Lutterotti to around 1825. Koch had already drawn the motif from the Old Testament in around 1799. Circa 1803 he painted a small version in oil (Schäfer Collection, Schweinfurt) and then, around 1804, a larger version, which is now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. Almost twenty years later, he again produced drawings and a large painting (formerly privately owned in England) with this theme. From this period, to which our sheet is also dated, von Lutterotti lists two further drawings, which are also likely to be directly related to the paintings referred to above (illustrations in Lutterotti, op. cit., p. 208).
