Albert Christoph Dies came to Rome in 1775 and, together with Johann Christian Reinhart, Joseph Anton Koch and the Swiss Johann August Nahl, soon joined the circle of German-speaking landscape painters around Jakob Philipp Hackert. They all wandered through the surroundings of Rome and shaped the Romantic era's image of Italy with their drawings and paintings.
