Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was the progenitor of the Koekkoek family of painters, which branched out over three generations. Johannes Hermanus began his artistic career at the "Middelburgse Teeken-Academie", founded in 1778, where he received special distinction in 1803. In 1826 he moved to Durgendam, not far from Amsterdam, where he stayed until 1831. He spent the last years of his life in Amsterdam. His marriage to Anna van Kollwijk produced a daughter - Anna Koekkoek (b. 1812) - and four sons: Barend Cornelis, Marinus Adrianus the Elder, Johannes and Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder, who all received their first painting lessons in their father's studio and later devoted themselves to painting.
