Ludwig Lange, attributed to

Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

Oil on canvas (relined). 56 x 64 cm.

This painting shows the Temple of Poseidon, located at Cape Sounion at the southernmost point of Attica and formerly named the "Temple of Minerva Sunias", one of the most popular and famous destinations for travellers to Greece in the 19th century.

The unsigned painting can probably be attributed to the architect and architectural draughtsman Ludwig Lange, who was a pupil of Carl Rottmann. Lange accompanied the latter to Greece in 1834 and did not return to Munich until 1838. Very few oil paintings by Ludwig Lange are known; however, a viable comparison can be made with his signed painting "The Gate of Athena Archegetis in Athens", dated 1842, which came up for auction at Lempertz in 2017 (Lempertz auction 1087, Cologne 20.5.2017, lot 1523).
