Troyon

Festivities in the Park of Saint-Cloud

Oil on panel (parquetted). 27 x 35 cm.
Signed lower right: C. Troyon.

After Constant Troyon first worked as a designer for the porcelain factory in his birthplace of Sèvres, he joined the Barbizon school of painting in the early 1930s and was the most successful painter of this group in his time. His increasingly free style of painting made him one of the forerunners and instigators of Impressionism. Our painting shows a festival in the park of Saint-Cloud with various stages, artists and jugglers watched by numerous elegantly dressed spectators.

Provenance

Formerly Galerie Charpentier, Paris (two gallery labels on the reverse of the cradled panel). - Konrad O. Bernheimer Gallery, Munich and London. - Acquired there in 1993 for a private collection in southern Germany.
