Portrait of a Lady

Oil on canvas (relined). 72.5 x 58 cm.

This portrait was shown in 1923 in an exhibition at the Galerie Thannhauser in Munich. It was there that Meier-Graefe saw it for the first time and included it in the supplement to his catalogue raisonné published in 1910. Unfortunately, the identity of the lady is not known, nor are the stages the painting made after this first exhibition. Later Marées literature has always cited it according to Meier-Graefe's Addenda as well as an article by Wilhelm Hausenstein, a review of that Thannhauser exhibition.
