Jörg Immendorf is an eminent political artist who provokes, comments, interferes, and who aims to raise awareness of social and contemporary historical contexts. “His pictures are political messages and serve to expose the hushed-up weaknesses of people and politicians. Like Beuys, he is always searching for congenial persons, a leader who takes responsibility for others and strives for change: image is slogan, and slogan is image. The separate areas of validity for text and image are eliminated. […] It is aggressive art that provokes discussion. The artist uses his privilege to fulfil his social responsibility. Immendorff creates a new ‘type of history painting’: expressive, bold, comic-like, ironic. His artistic forebears here are Kirchner, Dix, and Beckmann. The image as an autonomous work of art is extinct. It transmutes into a leaflet, a poster, a teaching board. This corresponds to the close connection between writing and image in Immendorff’s work.“ (Heinz Althöfer, in: Die Moral der Malkunst, in: Jörg Immendorff, Bilder, exhib.cat. Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund 2000, p.40).
