A boxwood okimono netsuke of an eagle and a monkey. Ise. Late 19th century

The bird of prey stands on a monkey lying on its back which is desperately trying to free itself from the grip of the eagle's claws digging into his face. Eye pupils inlaid black. Signed Masanao in a cartouche reserved from the monkey's fur.
