Affandi

Landscape by a sea under a blue sky

Landscape by a sea under a blue sky. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1985 lower left. On the reverse of the wooden frame in black: M 755 1985. Framed.

Affandi was a self-taught artist, considered a leading figure among the representatives of Indonesian modernism famous for his expressionist style of painting with swirling lines, which he cultivated from the 1950s onwards. Affandi gained international recognition when he represented Indonesia at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and at the São Paulo Biennale in 1956. He was later honoured with prestigious awards and teaching assignments in the United States and Indonesia.
