A rare pair of Meissen porcelain dishes from the dinner service for Count Sulkowski
Small, shallow dishes in Sulkowski ozier design painted with the count's crowned arms of alliance supported by two lions rampant. Blue crossed swords mark, dreher's mark of Johann Elias Grund sen. Very minor wear to the glaze, a radial scratch in the glaze on the underside of one bowl at 6 o'clock. D 18.7 cm.
1738, model by Johann Joachim Kaendler.
The service, which was produced in Meissen as of 1735 for the Saxon minister Aleksander Józef Reichsgraf von Sulkowski and his wife Maria Anna Franziska von Stain zu Jettingen, was one of the first large orders that was not made directly for the Saxon Elector Friedrich August II (King August III of Poland) and in which Johann Joachim Kaendler was involved as a modeler. The exact extent of the order can only be guessed at. It is assumed that there were around 600 pieces in total, mostly plates, platters and shallow bowls. Production came to an abrupt end in 1738 because the Imperial Count fell out of favour and was banished from court.
