The composition of this work, showing the Madonna embraced by the Christ Child, is based on a lost painting by Rogier van der Weyden. Numerous imitations from the 16th century onwards testify to the success of van der Weyden's original. Various groups of works exist showing stylistic affinities to the paintings of Adriaen Isenbrandt or Ambrosius Benson. This piece can be linked to Cornelis Coffermans. The quality of the execution is very fine and sets the work apart from most paintings of this type. The Antwerp based painter Coffermans can be characterised as an eclectic artist who created works in the manner of many different painters of the 16th century.
