Hans III. Jordaens

The Crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 14.21-26)

Oil on panel. 53.2 x 76 cm.

Stamped with the coat-of-arms of the City of Antwerp and with the panel maker's mark of Lambrecht Steens I (active c. 1608-1632) on the reverse.
The painting is listed in the RKD's archive under the number 243262. Another version of the subject is housed in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg (inv. no. 444). Here, too, the moment is captured in which Moses, with raised hands, commands the Red sea to flow back, causing the Pharaoh's army to sink into the floods before the eyes of his rescued people.
