The Penitent Saint Peter

Oil on canvas (relined). 145 x 106 cm.

The penitent St. Peter was a popular subject in the Baroque period and was depicted numerous times, for example by El Greco, Guido Reni, Domenico Fetti, Jusepe de Ribera and Guercino. This work shows the saint as a lone, monumental figure whose gestures express his pains of conscience after the denial of Jesus.
