Christian Georg Schütz the Elder

A View of Frankfurt

Oil on canvas (relined). 51 x 119.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower centre (on the barrel): Schütz. F / 1754.

The painter Christian Georg Schütz the Elder became known in particular for his landscapes with rural figures, mostly idealised views of the Rhine, as painted before him by the Dutchman Hermann Saftleven. Rarer in his oeuvre are large-format city views such as this view of Frankfurt, the city in which Schütz lived and worked throughout his life, which is as detailed as it is atmospherically charming. Schütz spreads out a panorama of the city, showing both sides of the Main river. Lively scenes take place on the old stone bridge in the foreground, which connects the right bank of the river with Sachsenhausen. No doubt the works of the Venetian Bernardo Bellotto, who worked in Dresden as of 1747 and whose fame was very widespread, served as a model for the present work. Most of Schütz's comparable city views are housed in the Historical Museum of the City of Frankfurt, and they therefore appear very rarely on the art market.
