Probably Central Germany ca. 1480/1490

A carved wood relief from a Crucifixion altarpiece, attributed to Central Germany, around 1480/1490

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. With exposed, presumably largely original, polychromy. Pierced high relief with smooth edges indicating that it originally formed part of a large carved altarpiece. The depiction of the bearded men with Jewish caps, the soldier and grimacing henchman show that this work belonged to a finely sculpted Crucifixion scene.
Wear with minor losses to the polychromy, the fingers of the two figures on the left partially lost. A vertical crack to the reverse between the outermost and the central figures. 63.5 x 42 x 18 cm.

Provenance

Acquired in 1969 in the antiquarian bookshop Joseph Fach, Frankfurt. - Subsequently in a German private collection.
