Lorenz Luchsperger, attributed to

A carved wood figure of a Saint, attributed to Lorenz Luchsperger

Carved almost entirely in the round, the narrow reverse flattened. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of a saint standing in contrapposto, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The type speaks for the figure being an apostle, but the identifying attribute that would originally have been held in his extended hands is lost. The sculptural quality of the piece is largely defined by the deeply carved drapery of the cloak, which falls in voluminous folds around the figure's body. The 1954 expertise that accompanies this work (the name of the author of which is largely illegible, possibly Dr Franz Kilsberger) makes reference to the sculptor Lorenz Luchsperger from Wiener Neustadt.
The separately attached hands and the toes of one foot lost. Some short cracks. The front edge of the plinth reattached. Minimal wear. Height 85 cm.

Provenance

Private ownership, Vienna.
