Nikolaus Weckmann, attributed to

A carved limewood figure of St. John, attributed to Nikolaus Weckmann

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A figure of the saint standing in a gently swaying pose holding his identifying attribute, the chalice, in his left hand. Designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The attribution to Nikolaus Weckmann was made based on the characteristic round opening - the so-called "woodpecker hole" - in the back of the head.
The formerly separately attached right hand lost. The back of the head with holes and losses, reattached with dowels and with a small addition to the shoulder. Wear throughout. Height 95 cm.

Provenance

Franco-German private collection.
