A Northern French limestone relief of the Lamentation of Christ, circa 1600

The sides smoothed, the reverse left raw. With remains of older polychromy. A round, high-relief depiction of the seated Madonna surrounded by figures of Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus and Saint John. She holds the body of Christ upon Her lap, displaying His stigmata, and the nails and crown of thorns are shown at His feet. The piece would originally have been set into a wall.
The upper border lost. Minor wear throughout. 40 x 43 x 19 cm.
