Jacob Philipp Hackert

Hunter in the Cascines of Pisa

Brush and ink in brown over pencil. 55.3 x 82.3 cm.
Framed under glass.
Signed lower right: Alle Cascine di Pisa / Filippo Hackert 1800.

The present drawing was made in the first year of Hackert's Tuscan exile. Formerly court painter under Ferdinand IV in Naples, the painter had fled the city in the course of the revolutionary events in March 1799 and took up residence in Pisa, where he stayed from 15th May 1799 to 14th May 1800. After that he moved to Florence.

The drawing shows the so-called Cascine, a wooded area at the gates of Pisa, in the centre of which were a dairy and stables of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. It has a special significance in Hackert's œuvre, as no other drawings are known from the first half of 1800 apart from two preparatory drawings for paintings with views of Pisa.
